Our Breakfasts

Vegetarian/ Vegan/ Gluten-free friendly

Our Bed & Breakfast Philosophy

Basically, we try to cater for everyone – whether you are a carnivore, vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, dairy intolerant, or simply have specific tastes…. Please ask about our Breakfast options.

We like to try and keep it local, fresh and varied. All our meats are sourced from Thomason’s, the local Keswick butchers, who in turn source their meats from Cumbrian farms. Our Eggs come from Scales farm, just down the road, and are proper free range  – you can actually see the hens running around outside – not pretend free range where the hens simply get a bit more room than their poor old battery cousins 🙁

We stock Lancashire black pudding, and given that once upon a time this part of the world was on the Scottish side of the border, Macsween’s fine haggis – both meat and vegan varieties. Just to take the British fusion a step further, as your chef is a Welshman, we also offer homemade Glamorgan sausage as a vegetarian or vegan delight, rather than just heaping on more beans, mushrooms and tomatoes and thinking that qualifies as ‘vegetarian’ or ‘vegan’ 😉 We’ve absolutely no American heritage but also offer homemade American style fluffy pancakes as an alternative breakfast 🙂

Every day there are homemade fresh fruit compotes made up of seasonal fruits, fresh local yoghurt and Leigh’s homemade cakes and biscuits, many made to traditional old Cumbrian recipes – please ask if you want the recipe!

We believe that a cup of coffee should be made from real coffee, not freeze dried instant sachets – so you will find a Nespresso machine in every room with a range of compostable pods containing fine coffees from around the world. In the morning you can choose from Nespresso blends – espresso, latte cappuccino, or filter coffee made from freshly ground beans from Farrer’s in Kendal each morning. There are also coffee bags if you really don’t fancy trying to work the Nespresso machines 😉

We aim to refuse, reduce, reuse, resell, and recycle, and as such we try to avoid the use of single use items as much as possible. You won’t find individual plastic jam containers – you’ll find a range of pots of Claire’s marvellous homemade Jams and marmalades, made just up the road in Wigton, that is when we haven’t had time to make our own!

We also don’t do UHT milk; The mini fridge in the dining room is kept stocked with small bottles of fresh milk – like the ones you had a school if you’re lucky enough to be our age or over – to take up stairs and use with your hospitality tray.

Equally when it comes to “hash browns” we really don’t see the need to get Auntie Bessie or Mr McCain to refine, salt, oil and cover the good old British potato in preservatives, and then package them in single use plastics and freeze them – so you’ll usually find a range of different freshly cooked potatoes on your plate – scallops, smashed, rostis etc, depending on what spuds are about and the general mood of our chef 🙂
